Susan’s Buttermilk Dumplings

1 ½ tablespoons Crisco
or
2 tablespoons butter
2 cups flour (a soft wheat flour like White Lily brand)
1 ½ teaspoons baking powder
1 teaspoon baking soda
¾ teaspoon salt
1 cup buttermilk

Sift together the dry ingredients. Add the Crisco or butter, and using two knives, cut the fat into the dry ingredients until all resembles coarse meal. Gently add the buttermilk, and stir. The dough will be soft and sticky. Using a spoon, place spoonfuls of dough, one by one, on the top of a hot, simmering liquid, such as soup. Cover pot, and steam your dumplings for 15 min.
