This is the first recipe I ever made. Having lived my entire life previous to this with box brownie mixes, it was a revelation as to how good home-made brownies are. I got it out of the Amy Vanderbilt’s Complete Cookbook. It was always available in my mom’s kitchen, but as I’ve written elsewhere, she just didn’t believe that she could bake. But she didn’t scare me away from it when I wanted to try.
½ cup butter
2 1-ounce squares unsweetened chocolate
1 cup sugar
2 eggs
1 teaspoon vanilla
¾ cup flour
½ cup chopped nuts
Melt butter and chocolate in saucepan; remove from heat. Stir in sugar, then blend in eggs one at a time. Add vanilla; stir in flour and nuts. Bake at 350° in a greased 8" x 8" x 2" pan, for 30 min.
