Shoo-fly Pie

This is an old family recipe from my spouse’s mother. Now if you need to know how to pre-bake the crust, go here for the clearest directions. And, it’s also Alton Brown’s Shoo-fly Pie recipe page.

¾ cup dark molasses
¾ cup boiling water
½ teaspoon baking soda
½ teaspoon salt
1 ½ cups sifted flour
¼ cup butter
½ cup brown sugar, packed
9 inch deep-dish pie pan, with pre-baked crust

Heat oven to 375°.

  1. Mix together molasses, water, soda, salt.
  2. Mix flour, butter, brown sugar with your hands to make a crumb.
  3. Pour about one half molasses mixture into crust; top with about one half flour mixture.
  4. Alternate layers, ending with flour mixture.

Bake for 35 min.

Serve warm or cold.
