Gingerbread (Domino Sugar)

1 ¼ cups firmly-packed dark brown sugar
¾ teaspoon salt
½ cup shortening
2 eggs
1 cup milk
1 teaspoon vinegar
2 cups all-purpose flour
1 teaspoon baking soda
¾ teaspoon ground cinnamon
1 ½ teaspoons ground ginger
½ teaspoon ground nutmeg

Preheat oven to 350°. Grease and flour a 9" x 9" x 2" pan.

Cream sugar, salt, and shortening thoroughly in a large mixing bowl. Beat eggs into the creamed mixture, one at a time, until light and fluffy. Combine milk and vinegar. Sift together flour, soda, and spices. Alternately add flour mixture and milk to creamed mixture, blending well after each addition. Turn into prepared pan. Bake at 350° for one hour or until tester comes out clean. Turn gingerbread out on cooling rack.
